Summer Snack Series: This One’s For the Kids!

With school back in session or right around the corner, this week Carly and I decided to focus on a delicious, nutritious and easy snack that you can pack, provide or prepare for your younger kids! While I am not a mom yet, I’ve seen how time consuming it can be to prepare and provide food for your child throughout the day. So, here you go moms! If you haven’t tried this snack yet for your child, Carly will convince you otherwise!

Let me preface this by saying, I am a fairly new mom (only been in the game for 20 months). I have learned something new about being a mom every single day. This shit is hard. I welcome all moms to this post: new moms, moms-to-be, step-moms, animal-moms, waiting to become moms, however you identify as a mom: mom. 

I also want to admit that I attempted (and succeeded) to make my own squeezable fruit/vegetable pouches for my daughter when she was still getting the hang of eating. There is actually this great contraption that my sister and I bought my mom as a ‘nod’ to have her do it for us. 

The snack I want to highlight this week is the squeezable, portable, fruit/veggie pouches. THEY ARE BRILLIANT. Here’s why: 

  • Portable (ie, don’t need a bowl and spoon) 
  • Small (can fit in any bag) 
  • Puree texture, enjoyable for kiddos (also not a choking risk) 
  • Non-perishable 
  • Relatively in-expensive (about $1.00 per pouch)
  • Many different flavors 

I was trying to make snack time very difficult for myself by always trying to have a freshly steamed or freshly cut up and ripened to perfection fruit and vegetable arrangement for my daughter. (Now- in a perfect world I would do this all myself, but I have to work so I can’t always make it a reality. ) These things are game changers. Find a brand you like, and keep it simple. The only ingredients should be fruits or veggies (although my daughter does love the yogurt ones too!) These are great as a between meal snack, an addition to main meal, or really anytime they need something quick, easy, and healthy. 

If your child is old enough to have purees, these are appropriate and will save you time and imagination!
